Kris was born and raised in the Brainerd Lakes Area. After earning his architecture degree at North Dakota State University in 2005 Kris moved to Duluth where he worked for several firms focusing mostly on commercial projects. In 2013 he opened Studio North | Architecture + Design. Since then his work and experience has continued to grow specializing in everything from cabins to lake homes to small scale commercial projects. After fifteen years living in Duluth Kris moved back to the lakes area with his family and is now settled in Pequot Lakes. Kris has worked on projects throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin and enjoys helping clients develop their dreams into reality. For many people the northern part of Minnesota and Wisconsin holds something extraordinarily special. Among the trees, lakes, and rivers there is a common belief declaring this a unique region in our beautiful country. What constitutes the northwoods as a unique region is what inspires the designs Kris develops. With 18 years of experience Kris is balanced with a fundamental background and knowledge of project management responsibilities and client relations with experience in planning, analysis, design, and implementation of a variety of project types. Kris is a member of the American Institute of Architects, is NCARB certified, and is licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. When not in the studio Kris spends his free time enjoying the outdoors, traveling, and attending his children’s assorted activities.

Working with Studio North
Established in 2013, Studio North | Architecture + Design specializes in residential and small commercial projects. Like life, architecture should not be complicated. The services offered are intended to be used a la carte so the client can pick and choose which services are needed to meet their project goals. A la carte design services offers a truly flexible, unique, and affordable approach to working on a project. As a sole proprietor architecture firm, Studio North is set up to provide clients with exceptional one-on-one service. Small firms are built on personal relationships with their clients and clients are not isolated from who is actually doing the work. Studio North is focused on building those personal relationships with clients to provide quality work and comprehensive services that result in simple, cost effective design solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of their clients.
Services
Consultation
This is where it starts. Kris will provide a free consultation and site visit to kickoff your project.
Programming
Programming is a research and decision making process that identifies timeline, budget, and scope of work to be designed. Kris will meet with the owner to determine project goals and requirements.
Code Analysis
This is the research phase of the project, when zoning requirements, local ordinances, and building codes are reviewed and addressed.
Building Design
The fun part. During building design, Kris develops drawings to show the function and aesthetic of the project that include spatial relationships, scale, and form for the owner to review.The drawings typically include site plan, floor plans, exterior elevations, and building sections. Kris can also develop 3D models which allows the owner to see how the building will look before it is built.
Construction Documents
Once the owner is satisfied with the building design documents, Kris produces a set of drawings with greater detail that include all pertinent information required for the contractor to price and build the project. The level of detail in CDs may vary depending on the owner’s preference.
Bidding
This is the phase that Construction Documents are sent to contractors for pricing. Kris will assist the owner with evaluating bids, making a contractor selection, and developing the construction contract.
Construction Administration
Construction Administration services help the contractor to build the project as specified in the CDs as approved by the owner. Questions may come up during construction that require more information and Kris can develop additional drawings to provide clarification needed to finish the project properly.
